Gautam Gambhir Reveals Plans to Manage Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload for England Test Series

Gautam Gambhir Reveals Plans to Manage Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload for England Test Series

India is set to embark on a challenging tour of England starting June 20, 2025, with a highly anticipated five-match Test series that will also mark the beginning of their 2025–27 World Test Championship campaign. Among the most talked-about aspects of this series is the availability of India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. With the demanding nature of a five-Test series, managing Bumrah’s workload will be one of the biggest priorities for the Indian team management.

Gautam Gambhir, India’s newly appointed head coach, addressed Bumrah’s availability during a press conference held ahead of the tour. While Bumrah is expected to play a crucial role in England’s swinging conditions, Gambhir acknowledged the importance of carefully planning the fast bowler’s participation to ensure his long-term fitness and effectiveness. The head coach was asked whether Bumrah would be playing all five Tests or just a few of them. In response, Gambhir clarified that the team has not made any concrete decisions on that front yet. He stated, “We haven’t taken that call, which three games is he going to play. We are going to have a discussion with him and it will depend on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well and that is important.”

The statement clearly indicates that Bumrah’s involvement in the series will be dynamic, based on how the series progresses and what the team requires at different stages. Considering the physical demands of Test cricket, especially in English conditions where fast bowlers play a pivotal role, the Indian team is taking a cautious and strategic approach.

Newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill also weighed in on Bumrah’s potential participation. Gill expressed full confidence in the team’s bowling depth and said the squad is equipped with a strong pace battery. “We have picked enough bowlers and we have a good enough pace battery. A lot of fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation or any position,” said Gill. While he acknowledged Bumrah’s importance, Gill emphasized that India’s strength lies in its collective bowling unit and not just individual performances. “Obviously, when you have someone like him (Bumrah), depending on how many matches he would play, whenever he would come back and play the match for us, it would be a great sight for us,” he added.

This measured approach from both Gambhir and Gill highlights India’s evolving mindset towards player workload management, especially in the longer format. As one of the most impactful bowlers in world cricket, Bumrah’s presence, even if limited, can significantly alter the outcome of a Test match. At the same time, safeguarding his fitness for future engagements remains equally important for the Indian camp.

As the countdown to the England tour begins, fans and analysts alike will keep a close eye on how India rotates its pace attack and utilizes Jasprit Bumrah. The strategy adopted could set a precedent for future tours and play a defining role in India’s success in the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
