ONDC – A threat to Swiggy and Zomato?

ONDC, a digital platform designed by the government of India to create equal opportunities to all the operators in the market, it facilitates the direct association with the restaurants and the consumers while eliminating the intermediaries and aggregators like Swiggy, Zomato and others who deal with the food orders.

This platform has been accepted by a large number of people especially for the reasonable prices when compared to any other competitors.

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is not just restricted to food deliveries, But by using this platform, customers can place dozens of orders like home decor, groceries and so on. This platform acts similar to blinkit, Zepto and others.

As per the review, Swiggy and Zomato charges a huge commission of 25-30% for delivering food from the restaurants. But, ONDC demands only 2-5% commission and thus allows the operators of restaurants to provide much better deals to their customers.

ONDC is a non-profit private organization established by the (DPIIT) Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade of Indian Government to start an open e-commerce portal on 31 December 2021 with an initial capital invested by the Protean e-Governance Technologies Ltd., and Quality Council of India to encourage the relationship between the retailers, technology platforms and shoppers.

Zomato and Swiggy are the two strong food delivery apps in India where most of Citizens are dependent for the food delivery in their doorsteps. But, in recent times people were surprised by the screenshots of an unknown food delivery platform that are being circulated in the social media which conveys that the food ordered in ONDC is much more economical when compared to any other famous apps that are working inside the country.

ONDC is a platform that helps different businesses and it is not like the regular applications that we have in our smartphones. It is now associated with Meesho, Paytm, Spice Money, Mystore, Magicpin and Craftsvilla to grant the access for the customers to place their orders from various businesses that are listed in the ONDC.

Very few restaurants are being listed in this platform as compared to Swiggy and Zomato. ONDC is new to the Indian market and it is expected to get better in the following days.

The first network of ONDC began on 29 April 2022 in Bengaluru, Delhi, Bhopal, Coimbatore and Shillong. Later, it expanded its business operations in Udupi, Noida, Kanchipuram, Pollachi, Mannar,Faridabad, Lucknow, Bijnor, Bhopal, Chhindwara, Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, Kannur, Thrissur and Ramanathapuram.
