“Please, don’t eat my cat”: South African Musician’s Viral Song Satirizes Donald Trump

A parody song by part-time South African musician David Scott, also known as The Kiffness, has taken the internet by storm, amassing over 8.7 million views on YouTube in just 12 days. The song, titled “Eating the Cats,” humorously addresses a false claim by Donald Trump, where he suggested that Haitian immigrants were consuming cats and dogs in America.

In the playful tune, Scott sings, “People of Springfield please don’t eat my cat,” offering lighthearted, vegetarian alternatives like broccoli, avocados, and poached eggs. Known for creating feel-good music about pets and children, Scott emphasizes that the song is not meant to attack anyone, but rather to add humor and offer some friendly advice to protect pets.

In an interview with AFP before a performance in Paris, Scott shared that music has the ability to diffuse negativity, especially when dealing with polarizing figures like Trump. He noted that his love for creating animal-themed music stems from a desire to bring people together, as pets often have a unifying effect on people.

The viral video features Kamala Harris’s reactions to Trump’s statements, alongside amusing appearances by cats and dogs contributing “vocals” and incredulous expressions. Scott revealed that all the song’s proceeds, which have already surpassed $20,000, will go toward supporting pets and stray animals in Springfield.

Despite the comedic tone, Scott maintains that the song was created to help people rise above divisiveness and find humor in the situation. He describes himself as a “Christian, husband, father, and part-time musician” on social media platform X, and sees music as a way to bridge divides.

Local officials in Springfield, including the mayor and Ohio’s Republican governor, have confirmed that there is no evidence to support Trump’s claim. However, Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, has continued to push the narrative, despite facing backlash. Haitian groups in Springfield have since filed charges against both Trump and Vance for causing threats and unrest with these false rumors.
