Relief for Commuters: New Highway Planned Between Okhla Barrage and Yamuna Expressway to Alleviate Traffic and Reduce Pollution

A new highway is being proposed between Okhla Barrage and the Yamuna Expressway to provide a much-needed alternative route and alleviate congestion on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. Authorities are considering building either a six-lane expressway or an eight-lane ground-level road through the Hindon-Yamuna Doab. The new route aims to address the severe traffic jams that cause long delays and contribute significantly to air pollution in the region.

On September 18, the Noida Authority submitted a proposal to the Principal Secretary of Uttar Pradesh’s Public Works Department to have the new route designated as a National Highway. This designation is crucial for advancing the project, and further procedural steps will follow to get construction started.

Once approved, the highway project is expected to boost regional development by improving connectivity and accommodating future traffic growth. It is also seen as a critical move to mitigate air pollution and promote environmental sustainability in Noida, Greater Noida, and Delhi.
