Elon Musk Reacts as Russia Hides Record-Low Birth Rate Decline Marked as State Secret
Elon Musk Reacts to Alarming Russian Population Crisis Branded as ‘State Secret’
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has once again drawn global attention to a growing issue he often calls the “greatest existential threat” facing humanity—falling birth rates. This time, Musk responded to a startling update shared on X (formerly Twitter) by online influencer and IBC Group founder Mario Nawfal, regarding Russia’s population crisis. Nawfal cited a Newsweek report revealing that Russia’s birth rate has dropped to a 200-year low, to the extent that authorities have now classified the data as a “State Secret.”
According to the Newsweek excerpt shared by Nawfal, Russia is facing an unprecedented demographic downturn. Births in the country have dropped so dramatically in 2025 that the government has ceased publishing monthly birth statistics. One of Russia’s top demographers indicated that March 2025 may have recorded the lowest number of births since the 1700s. Projections suggest a significant decline in Russia’s population from its current 146 million to 132 million by 2045. In the worst-case scenario, Russia’s population could plummet to just 83 million by the year 2100, marking a steep demographic decline with vast socioeconomic implications.
In an effort to combat this population crisis, the Russian government has implemented extreme measures. These include banning what it terms as “childfree ideology,” restricting access to abortion, offering direct financial incentives to pregnant women, and controversially proposing to release certain prisoners to encourage childbirth. In addition, cultural censorship has been suggested, with TV shows such as Harry Potter and Sex and the City potentially facing bans for allegedly promoting messages that discourage family formation and reproduction.
Responding to Nawfal’s post, Elon Musk emphasized the global nature of the issue by stating, “Almost all countries are experiencing birth rate collapse.” Musk has frequently warned that declining birth rates are not isolated to Russia but are a widespread phenomenon with long-term dangers. He has often highlighted countries like Japan, South Korea, and Singapore as critical examples of regions on the brink of demographic collapse. Musk believes that, left unaddressed, the global birth rate crisis could lead to a scenario akin to the fall of the Roman Empire—where civilizations shrink and vanish due to population decline.
Musk’s concerns are not new. Over the years, he has consistently voiced alarm about the world’s diminishing fertility rates, arguing that the current trend is unsustainable. According to him, technological advancement cannot compensate for a rapidly shrinking population, and society might face a future without enough people to sustain innovation, economic growth, or even cultural continuity.
This issue resonates deeply amid increasing debates around economic development, aging populations, and societal values across both developed and developing nations. While some countries are grappling with the challenges of overpopulation, others are staring down a future marked by labor shortages, shrinking markets, and a weakened social fabric.
As global policymakers look for solutions, Elon Musk’s comments continue to push the conversation forward—demanding attention from governments, economists, and citizens alike. The situation in Russia now serves as a powerful and pressing case study in this worldwide demographic trend.
