Israeli Army Chief Warns of Unrelenting Gaza Offensive if Hostage Deal Fails

Israeli Army Chief Warns of Relentless Combat in Gaza if Hostage Negotiations Fail

JERUSALEM — Tensions in the Gaza Strip continue to escalate as Israel’s Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant-General Eyal Zamir, issued a stern warning that military operations will persist without pause if efforts to secure the release of Israeli hostages are not successful in the coming days. In a statement released by the Israeli military, Zamir emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “I estimate that in the coming days we will know whether we can reach an agreement for the release of our hostages. If not, the combat will continue without rest.” His remarks were made during a strategic visit to officers stationed inside Gaza, with official military footage showing him in a command centre, reinforcing Israel’s commitment to ongoing operations.

This latest declaration comes amid one of the deadliest phases of the conflict. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which began in response to Hamas’s attack in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of at least 60,332 people, with a majority of the casualties reported as civilians, according to recent data. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to draw global attention, as international calls for a ceasefire grow louder.

Out of the 251 individuals who were kidnapped during the October 2023 assault by Hamas militants, 49 hostages remain in Gaza, including 27 confirmed dead, according to the Israeli military. This week, two distressing videos were released by Palestinian armed groups, showing visibly emaciated hostages—further intensifying the emotional strain on families and increasing public pressure on the Israeli government to act swiftly.

Negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages have been ongoing, mediated by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. However, talks collapsed last month, leading to a renewed wave of political tension within Israel and raising doubts about the viability of a diplomatic resolution. Frustration among hostage families is mounting, with many demanding a renewed push for a ceasefire to end the conflict and bring their loved ones home safely.

Domestically, the Israeli leadership is facing a complex dilemma: balancing military strategy with growing public dissent and international scrutiny. Calls for intensified military action are being heard alongside appeals for renewed negotiations, highlighting the deep divisions within Israeli society. Globally, there is increasing concern over the humanitarian toll in Gaza, with human rights organizations urging both sides to prioritize civilian lives and international law.

The coming days are seen as critical in determining the direction of the nearly 22-month-long conflict, with hostilities threatening to spiral further if diplomacy fails. As the world watches, the fate of the remaining hostages and the civilian population in Gaza hangs in the balance.
