“Mohammed Shami Opens Up on Injury Recovery and IPL 2025 Struggles, Aims to Deliver His Best for SRH”

India and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer Mohammed Shami has opened up about his journey of injury recovery and current struggles in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. After a long absence of 14 months from professional cricket due to a persistent injury, Shami has returned to the IPL with high expectations resting on his shoulders, especially after being bought for a hefty sum of Rs 10 crore by SRH during the IPL mega-auction. However, the veteran fast bowler, known for his lethal pace and accuracy, has not yet been able to replicate his past performances, raising questions about his form and fitness. Despite these challenges, Shami remains determined and focused on giving his best on the field.

The 36-year-old cricketer, who was the Purple Cap winner in IPL 2023 with 28 wickets in 17 matches, has only managed to pick up 6 wickets in 9 matches this season while conceding 337 runs at a high economy rate of 11.23. One of his most difficult performances came against the Punjab Kings, where he gave away 74 runs in just four overs, marking the second-most expensive bowling spell in IPL history. These statistics have sparked widespread speculation among fans and experts alike, questioning whether Shami is truly back to full match fitness. However, the seasoned bowler has addressed such concerns head-on.

In a recent interview on JioHotstar’s exclusive series Gen Gold, Shami clarified that he has completed his injury recovery and is now focused purely on his performance. He spoke candidly about the physical and mental challenges he faced during his recovery period, stating, “Injuries are part and parcel of a fast bowler’s life. My recovery took 14 months, and it wasn’t easy—especially given the challenges I faced during my domestic career. Regaining rhythm and the right mindset was tough. In 2023, I had a sudden breakdown, so I made it a point to play as many domestic matches as possible—ended up playing 12 or 13. That, along with the England series, helped me rebuild my confidence.”

Despite his recent struggles, Shami remains optimistic about his role within the SRH setup. He believes the team has evolved significantly, particularly in terms of its approach to the game and the balance within the bowling department. “SRH has completely changed my perspective—what used to be a 200-run target now feels like 300. They’ve redefined the game. As for my role, I want to be part of a team that sets new benchmarks and shifts mindsets. I feel I’ve joined a strong unit, and I’m focused on contributing my best. We’ve built a strong bowling unit as well at SRH — a solid pace attack and quality spinners to back it. Overall, our bowling is much more balanced now, and those who think SRH is only about batting are mistaken,” he added.

As SRH prepares to face Delhi Capitals in a crucial must-win encounter on May 5, all eyes will be on whether Shami makes it into the Playing XI. His potential return to form could be pivotal for SRH’s playoff hopes. With the franchise relying on experience and composure in pressure situations, Shami’s presence could provide the much-needed edge. While his form has been under scrutiny, his unwavering commitment and experience still make him a valuable asset for any team.
