Covid-19 Cases Surge to 3,758 in India with Fresh Infections in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi; Deaths Reported in Karnataka and Kerala

India has witnessed a significant surge in Covid-19 cases, with the total number of active infections rising to 3,758 as of Sunday, June 1, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). This marks the first notable increase in months, raising concerns across several states. In the past 24 hours alone, the country reported 363 new Covid-19 cases, highlighting a sharp upward trend that has prompted health advisories and renewed caution.

Among the states, Kerala has emerged as the hotspot, recording the highest number of active cases at 1,400. The state also logged 64 fresh cases in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra follows with 485 active cases and 18 new infections, while the national capital Delhi reported 436 active cases and 61 new cases in the same period. These numbers underline a concentrated rise in Covid-19 infections in some of the most densely populated and previously affected regions.

The country has also reported two Covid-19-related deaths in the 24-hour period between May 31 and June 1. One death was recorded in Kerala and the other in Karnataka. In Kerala, a 24-year-old woman suffering from sepsis, hypertension, and decompensated chronic liver disease (DCLD) succumbed to Covid-19 complications. In Karnataka, a 63-year-old man who was battling pulmonary tuberculosis and squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa also passed away; his Covid-19 positive status was detected incidentally. These cases highlight the increased risk Covid-19 poses to individuals with comorbidities and weakened immune systems.

Additionally, Delhi has reported its first Covid-19-related fatality amid the current surge. A 60-year-old woman who was found to be Covid-19 positive died due to complications following a laparotomy for acute intestinal obstruction. Officials stated that the Covid-19 detection was incidental in this case as well.

In response to the rising number of cases, the Karnataka government has issued a public advisory urging citizens to adopt responsible behaviour. People are being advised to wear masks in crowded places, maintain physical distancing, and follow good hygiene practices to curb the spread of the virus. This proactive step underscores the importance of public cooperation in managing potential waves of Covid-19.

The recent uptick in cases and fatalities has raised alarms for both citizens and authorities, especially as many had grown complacent after months of low infection rates. Health experts recommend continued vigilance, especially for vulnerable populations with underlying health conditions. The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation closely, and citizens are urged to stay informed and adhere to local health guidelines.
