United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced late Wednesday that six UNRWA staff members were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza school being used as a shelter.
“What’s happening in Gaza is completely unacceptable,” Guterres stated on the social media platform X, confirming the loss of the six workers. UNRWA called it the highest death toll among its staff in a single event.
The school, which housed approximately 12,000 displaced individuals, primarily women and children, had been hit five times since the conflict started, according to a separate UNRWA post on X.
Earlier that day, both the Israeli military and Gaza’s civil defense agency reported a strike on Al-Jawni school in Nuseirat. Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defense, informed AFP that 14 people were killed in the bombing.
The Israeli military said its air force targeted a Hamas command-and-control center located on the school grounds, but did not provide details about the identities of those affected.
