PM Modi and J&K CM Omar Abdullah Discuss Security After Pahalgam Terror Attack That Killed 26 Tourists

In a significant development following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi for the first time since the tragedy. The high-level meeting, which lasted for 30 minutes at the Prime Minister’s official residence, focused on security issues in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the aftermath of the April 22 terror strike that claimed the lives of 26 people, most of whom were tourists. The meeting highlights the Centre’s renewed focus on the security landscape of the region and the urgency of collaborative efforts between the state and central leadership.

According to reports by PTI, the dialogue between PM Modi and CM Omar Abdullah was constructive and somber, addressing multiple facets of the current security crisis. The Pahalgam terror attack, one of the deadliest in recent years, has sent shockwaves across the nation. Intelligence sources have identified five terrorists, including three Pakistani nationals, as the perpetrators behind the attack. The revelation has further strained Indo-Pak relations, prompting the Indian government to suspend all inbound mail, imports, and shipping activities from Pakistan, signaling a strong diplomatic response.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a heartfelt and emotionally charged address to the state assembly earlier this week, made it clear that he would not leverage the tragic incident for political gain. Holding back tears, he stated, “Curse be upon me if I go to Centre and push for statehood at this critical moment.” His words resonated across party lines, highlighting his commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of citizens over political aspirations. He acknowledged a deep sense of personal responsibility for the incident, stating, “I was the host of these people… It was my responsibility to send these people safely, which I was unable to do.” His candid expression of remorse has struck a chord with the public, earning both empathy and support from many quarters.

Earlier in the day, former Chief Minister and Omar Abdullah’s father, Farooq Abdullah, visited the attack site in Pahalgam and interacted with tourists to instill confidence and convey a message of resilience. Speaking to media representatives, he strongly reiterated that Kashmir “was and will always be a part of India.” He emphasized that the core message following the terror attack is that “the tourists are not scared.” In his powerful statement, he added, “The people who wanted to spread fear have lost. They (terrorists) have lost. It has been proven today that we are not going to get scared.” He called for an end to the decades-long scourge of terrorism, saying, “It has been 35 years since we have seen terrorism; we want progress. We want to move forward. We will become a superpower one day.”

The Pahalgam tragedy has not only brought national attention back to the unresolved security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir but also showcased a united front between state and central leaderships determined to restore peace and protect citizens. The resolve shown by both the Abdullahs underscores a rare moment of political unity amid crisis, marking a pivotal point in the ongoing battle against terrorism in the region.
