Actor Darshan offered biryani in custody? Bengaluru police respond

The Bengaluru police found themselves embroiled in controversy after social media erupted over allegations that they served biryani to actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, who was arrested in connection with a murder case. Videos circulated by Kannada TV channels showed biryani packets being taken into the Kamakshipalya police station, sparking public outrage. However, the police swiftly clarified that the biryani was not meant for Darshan but was intended for the police kabaddi team. They further stated that Darshan had only consumed idlis during his time in custody, dismissing claims to the contrary.

Darshan Thoogudeepa, a popular Kannada actor, was arrested along with his partner Pavithra Gowda on charges related to the murder of a 33-year-old man named Renukaswamy from Bengaluru. According to police reports, Renukaswamy was allegedly lured to Bengaluru under false pretenses by Darshan’s associate. Once there, he was purportedly kidnapped, tortured, and eventually murdered. The motive behind the crime was reportedly linked to derogatory messages that Renukaswamy had sent to Pavithra Gowda regarding her relationship with the married actor.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and scrutiny, with social media users expressing disbelief and anger over the alleged preferential treatment shown to Darshan during his detention. Critics argue that serving biryani to a murder accused, regardless of who it was intended for, sends the wrong message and undermines public trust in law enforcement. Many have called for transparency and accountability in how such cases are handled to ensure fairness and justice for all involved.

As investigations into the murder case continue, the police have emphasized their commitment to following due process and conducting a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Renukaswamy’s tragic death. They have assured the public that no special privileges were granted to Darshan during his time in custody and reiterated their adherence to the rule of law.

The controversy surrounding the biryani incident underscores broader concerns about ethical conduct and the perception of justice within the criminal justice system. It also highlights the power of social media in shaping public discourse and holding authorities accountable for their actions. Moving forward, there is likely to be increased scrutiny over how law enforcement agencies handle high-profile cases and the protocols they follow to maintain transparency and impartiality.
