BJP workers vandalize All Assam Students Union (AASU) offices after AASU won the Election.

Due to the clashes between supporters of the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) and the BJP, Diwali celebrations turned violent in Sorbhog town, Assam. Aasu won the college elections at Ramnagar College’s student union by securing seven out of eleven positions which included the main roles like the general secretary and the president, and this led to a subsequent unrest.

The situation mounted near the local BJP office after the victory rally of Aasu through the town. In order to disrupt the rally, BJP supporters threw stones and busted firecrackers from the building nearby and in return Aasu members who were celebrating with firecrackers hit back and this led to the clash between them. 5 students were hurt from which 4 were Aasu members in between the clash.

A woman BJP Leader named Anjali Das from Sorbhog was arrested by the police, and the situation became worse after it. Anjali faced a lot of allegations for physically attacking two Aasu office members reportedly with an iron rod, and the situation became more serious when her son was injured in the conflict, intensifying tensions.

Then an FIR (First Information Report) was filed against Anjali at the Sorbhog police station for physical attack on Aasu members. This created increased political tensions in the town resulting in legal actions on Anjali and built an unpleasant situation among the student union members and BJP supporters.
