Cyclone Michaung Prompts Statewide School Closures Across Tamil Nadu

In response to the looming threat of Cyclone Michaung, schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been shut down today as a precautionary measure. The cyclonic storm is currently forming over the Bay of Bengal and is anticipated to make landfall along the South Andhra Pradesh and neighboring North Tamil Nadu coastline. Districts such as Chennai, Chengalpet, Thiruvallore, and Kalaiselvi have announced the closure of educational institutions in light of the potential impact of the cyclone.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, prompting authorities to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of residents. Kanchipuram, Chennai, Chengalpet, and Thiruvallore districts have officially declared a holiday for schools and colleges on December 4, 2023, based on the IMD’s forecast of heavy rainfall. Parents and students are advised to stay updated and contact school authorities for any queries or confusion.

In a move to mitigate the impact of Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday today. Furthermore, private companies and offices have been urged to implement work-from-home arrangements or operate with essential staff only. This decision has been made in consideration of the impending cyclone and to ensure the safety of employees.

Puducherry and Karaikal took preemptive action on December 1, 2023, closing schools as a preventive measure against the approaching cyclone. The state government emphasizes the importance of staying informed and following guidance from local authorities during this period of heightened risk.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Chennai and neighboring areas, indicating a high risk of severe weather conditions. Eighteen response teams are on standby for deployment in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Puducherry to assist in any emergency situations that may arise.

Cyclone Michaung is expected to track west-northwest, potentially strengthening into a depression before moving over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and developing into a cyclonic storm. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising residents to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. As the cyclone evolves, further updates will be provided by the relevant authorities to keep the public informed and prepared for any developments.
