Security Threat to Virat Kohli: RCB Cancels Practice Session

As the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) prepared for their crucial IPL 2024 Eliminator match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), a significant security threat led to the cancellation of their only practice session. Concerns over Virat Kohli’s safety prompted this decision, with RCB choosing to prioritize security over their scheduled practice at the Gujarat College Ground in Ahmedabad. This development also led to the cancellation of the pre-match press conference, leaving many puzzled by the unusual situation.

According to a report from Anandabazaar Patrika, the Gujarat Police had hinted that the primary reason for canceling the practice session and the press conference was related to a potential security threat against Kohli. This concern was amplified after the police arrested four individuals in Ahmedabad on suspicion of terrorist activities. Following these arrests, the police alerted both IPL teams, with RCB deciding to cancel their practice session, while Rajasthan Royals chose to continue with their scheduled activities.

Vijay Singha Jwala, a police officer, confirmed that Kohli was informed about the arrests upon his arrival in Ahmedabad. Emphasizing Kohli’s importance as a national treasure, Jwala stated, “His security is our utmost priority.” Consequently, RCB did not want to take any risks and opted out of the practice session. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals were notified of the situation but chose to proceed with their practice.

To ensure the safety of the players, the police enhanced security measures around RCB’s team hotel, restricting entry even for IPL-accredited members. A ‘green corridor’ was established for the Rajasthan Royals to facilitate their travel to the training ground. Despite the heightened security, some players from the Royals, including R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Riyan Parag, decided to skip the practice session, with Captain Sanju Samson arriving late to the ground.

As the IPL 2024 Eliminator between RCB and RR approaches, strict security measures are expected to be maintained to ensure the safety of all players and staff. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of balancing security and logistical needs in high-profile sporting events.
