The Government Vs Farmers Unions

On Thursday 3rd of December 2020, the talks regarding the three agricultural laws were discussed by the Government of India and several Leaders of the Farmers Unions.

At the talks held with the farmers today, several Farmer Union Representatives demanded that there must be a specific law framed for Minimum support price (MSP). There were more than a group of 34 farmer leaders present in the fourth round talks held with the Central Government. Representatives of these farmer’s Union groups emphasized the government has to guarantee Minimum support price( MSP ) to them not only now but in the coming future as well. The farmers even refused to have the food served by the Government during the break at Vigyan Bhavan. They stated ” we are not accepting food or tea offered by the Government, we have brought our own food ). Farmers who attended the meeting told the government that their deal is done only when the new farm laws are repealed. They demanded the Government to repeal the laws or to forcefully send them back and calm the protest.

The farmers in the “Delhi Chalo March” protests who are majorly from Uttar Pradesh called for forming a Commission to look into their grievances. They also threatened that they would intensify their protest. These protests have caused public inconvenience therefore the police have closed a few highways on Thursday . Police closed the Highway routes that connect Ghaziabad to Delhi. The police say as farmers remained Adamant and protested saying they wanted the Government to repeal the three controversial agriculture farm laws in the borders of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh connecting the National Capital they had no choice but to control them by closing the routes on NH 9 and NH 24.

Punjab Chief Minister Amrendra Singh urged Home Minister Amit Shah to look into the issue with an open mind and that it would benefit farmers if they continue with the Agricultural produce Market Committee (APMC) based Mandi system.Amrendra Singh stresses the points that Government have to the protect the Minimum support price.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister palaniswamy viewed this as a positive act by the Government to Farmers. He says the new agricultural laws benefit the farmers.

The former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Badal took the farmers’ side by returning his reward.

Mamta Banerjee also commented on the new farmers bills warning that if the government of India does not withdraw the Anti- farmers bill then there will be campaign and strikes happening throughout the state and in the country to arouse public concern.

Several political leaders are giving out their opinion and views as to how the three controversial agricultural laws may benefit or not to the farmers.
