UAE Unveils World’s Largest Solar Power System with the Inauguration of Al Dhafra Solar PV Project

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has marked a historic milestone in the realm of clean energy with the inauguration of the world’s largest single-site solar power plant, the 2-gigawatt (GW) Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Project (IPP). Located just 35 kilometers from Abu Dhabi city, this monumental undertaking is poised to generate enough electricity to power nearly 200,000 homes while contributing to an annual displacement of 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

The momentous inauguration ceremony was presided over by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, who underscored the plant’s significance as a symbol of progress in solar power efficiency, innovation, and cost competitiveness. This project is emblematic of the UAE’s commitment to sustainable practices and its vision for a cleaner, greener future.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, COP28 President-Designate, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Chairman of Masdar, emphasized Al Dhafra’s importance as a reflection of the UAE’s unwavering commitment to clean energy. The project has not only broken records in terms of scale but has also set new benchmarks for cost efficiency in utility-scale solar projects.

Initially boasting one of the most competitive tariffs for solar power at AED 4.97 fils/kWh (USD 1.35 cents/kWh), the project further improved upon financial close, reaching AED 4.85 fils/kWh (US$ 1.32 cents/kWh). This underscores the UAE’s dedication to driving down costs and making sustainable energy sources more economically viable.

The Al Dhafra Solar PV project is a pivotal step in the UAE’s ambitious transition to clean energy, aligning with its goals to triple renewables capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. Positioned as a model for global ambition in clean energy initiatives, the project showcases the nation’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability.

Crucially, this momentous achievement aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goal, reinforcing its leadership in solar energy production on a per capita basis. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and strategic investments, the UAE is demonstrating its prowess as a trailblazer in the global pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Moreover, the Al Dhafra Solar PV project serves as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to hosting a successful COP28. As the country prepares to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference from November 30th to December 12th this year, this groundbreaking project underscores the UAE’s position as a proactive contributor to global efforts in combating climate change.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the Al Dhafra Solar PV project marks a significant achievement in the UAE’s journey toward a sustainable and low-carbon future. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, the UAE stands at the forefront, showcasing the transformative power of clean energy initiatives on a grand scale.
