Bengaluru- Double-decker flyover at silk board junction, will it resolve traffic congestion?

In the next six months, Central Silk Board Junction, known for its most gridlocked locations and the nation’s busiest intersection. It became popular on social media for its clogged roads and promises to get better with the hopes of improvement.

One of the sites that professionals, particularly techies heading to Electronics City and Marathahalli – Sarjapur Road, frequently mention the place Silk Board Junction in their daily chats because of the congested traffic there.

The building of elevated ramps over the current flyover is moving quickly, thanks to the efforts of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), which has taken the enormous responsibility of resolving traffic issues at the junction. By avoiding the current flyover, the newly constructed ramps, which are 3 km in total, link Jayanagar side with the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in the direction of HSR Layout and Hosur Road.

Decongesting the intersection is what drivers mostly want. A metro-road bridge is currently under construction from the Jayanagar Ragigudda area to Silk Board beneath the metro’s yellow line. The new ramps will be included in this and those joining from the BTM layout will have access to them.

A BMRCL official mentioned that the state government has allocated them with the task of decongesting the major bottleneck as the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra) of Metro rail cuts through it. In upcoming days, the Blue Line (Central Silk Board to airport) will also start from the area. Currently, the traffic flow at the junction is slow and a bit chaotic as there are four traffic signals under the flyover, forcing motorists to wait for longer time. In this backdrop it was decided to construct new ramps that would facilitate access to ORR and Hosur Road seamless,” .

“To provide the new road infrastructure, we need to build 105 huge pillars up to 21 meters high. Once the construction is in its final stages, we will work with the traffic police to divert traffic.” he added to the statement.

As the government needs to build a station as part of the blue line, in the opposite direction (from HSR Layout to BTM Layout), the slide will be built at a later date.

It is an urgent need to solve the traffic problem at this intersection in the most heavily trafficked area of Bengaluru. Fixing the traffic problem at this junction will allow commuters to move peacefully and it also helps people feel secure to travel and carry out daily tasks.
