Founder of MDH masala Mahashay Dharampal Gulati is no more.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati the founder and CEO of Mahashian Di Hatti (MDH private limited) passed away on 3rd December 2020 at City hospital in New Delhi due to cardiac arrest. According to the reports, Gulati was undergoing treatment at Mata Chanan Devi Hospital for the past few weeks.

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati was born on March 27,1923 in Sialkot which is now situated in Pakistan. In 1933 he dropped out even before completing his fifth grade. After sometime he tried his luck in various businesses but couldn’t retain his interest in them for so long. Then he decided to join his father’s spices business conducted under the name Mahashian Di Hatti(MDH) well known as ‘Deggi Mirch Wale’. 

After partition he moved to India with his family. Initially he stayed in Amritsar and later came to Delhi with just ₹1500 in his pocket. There he was a horse-cart puller before opening a spice shop in Karol Bagh, Ajmal Khan road Delhi. With all their efforts Gulati group  re-established Mahashian Di Hatti and now they are one of India’s best spices manufacturers that owns more than 15 factories. MDH is very popular because it has overseas offices, even in Dubai and London. They sell around 62 products, three products among them namely – Deggi mirch, Chat Masala and Chana Masala are highly demanded and hence over a crore packets are sold every month.Their products are distributed across the world and the company claims 80% of market shares in north India.

Gulati was known as the ‘Spice King’ he was the main face of MDH spices advertisement (which became his identity) and he was probably the oldest ad star. He has also featured himself in  brand advertisements and print commercials. In the year 2017 he was India’s highest paid FMCG CEO who had taken home over ₹21crores as salary. In 2019, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award of India. He and his life journey is truly an inspiration for all the young entrepreneurs. The demise of legend Mahashay Dharampal Gulati is a great loss.
