Kerala Government – Schools shut in Kozhikode due to the outbreak of Nipah Virus

On 13th September, the Kerala Government instructed to close all the schools and colleges in few zones due to the spread of Nipah infection in Kozhikode and containment zones to restrain the infection.

V Sivankutty, the Education Minister of Kerala proceeded in giving the order for closing all schools and colleges in seven village areas where the infection was recognised and a death of two occurred, as per the reports published in Times Now.

Restrictions on social gatherings have been imposed by the Minister where the Nipah infection is proved. Whereas, the National Institute of Virology in Pune has issued a confirmation of the virus with the state official. Surveillance has been raised by the district administration’s health and panchayat departments in Kozhikode and in two village panchayats safety provisions are being implemented.

Geetha, the District Collector of Kozhikode while declaring the list of containment zones, posted the same on Facebook that Atanchery, Maruthonkara, Tiruvallur, Kuttiyadi, Kayakkodi, Villyapalli, and Kavilumpara are the places confirmed with the virus and listed under containment zones.

Police are protecting these villages with the restriction of traveling and public motion till further information. Public movement is allowed for emergencies like medical emergencies, pharmacies, hospitals and other basic essentials. The administration added that no restrictions will be laid for pharmacies and health centers but for other essential items and medical selling stores a time restriction is laid i.e from 7 AM to 5 PM.

Local Government offices will have a minimum number of staff whereas other institutions like banks, government institutions, schools, will be shut as per the district collector’s notice. Use of online services is recommended for people instead of going to the offices. In the areas concerned, vehicles are not permitted to stop within a containment zone while traveling on National Roads.

Safety measures like maintaining social distance, wearing masks and frequent use of hand sanitizers is recommended for the people staying in the containment zones.
