Union Minister Gadkari Kickstarts NH Projects Worth Rs 6,200 Crore

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has unveiled ambitious plans for Karnataka’s infrastructure development during his recent visit to the state. Among the key announcements is the proposal to construct a tunnel through the Agumbe ghat on NH-169, a move that aims to enhance connectivity and ease transportation in the region. Gadkari expressed his commitment to initiating the project following a thorough examination of the plan.

During the event, Gadkari also laid the foundation stone for 18 National Highway projects valued at Rs 6,200 crore, which will span across six districts of the state. Highlighting Karnataka’s pivotal role in the IT sector, particularly with Bengaluru emerging as a major technology hub, Gadkari emphasized that the state’s development trajectory significantly influences national progress. He reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of propelling the Indian economy to become the third-largest globally, with a target valuation of $5 trillion, emphasizing the collective mission of achieving self-reliance (‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’).

In line with promoting sustainable energy solutions, Gadkari advocated for the use of alternative fuels such as ethanol, methanol, and bagasse. Drawing from his personal experience of using ethanol-powered vehicles, he underscored the economic benefits associated with such vehicles compared to conventional fuel-powered ones. With Karnataka’s abundant sugarcane cultivation and existing sugar factories, Gadkari sees immense potential for ethanol production in the state, which could significantly contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Gadkari urged the state government and PWD Minister Sathish Jarkiholi to collaborate with Indian Oil Corporation to establish 400 ethanol pumps, facilitating the adoption of ethanol-based fuels across the state. Additionally, he proposed utilizing bagasse, a by-product of sugarcane processing, to support local farmers and promote the concept of “smart villages.”

The Union Road Transport Ministry is currently overseeing National Highway projects worth approximately Rs 3 lakh crore in Karnataka. Gadkari appealed to the state government to expedite land acquisition and obtain forest environmental clearances to accelerate the progress of these ongoing projects.

Furthermore, Gadkari sanctioned several new projects, including the widening of highways from Sagar to Marakutaka and Baindur to Ranebennur, with construction slated to commence within the next three months. Additionally, plans for the construction of a bypass for Shivamogga are already underway, with detailed project reports (DPRs) ready for implementation.Gadkari’s comprehensive roadmap for Karnataka’s infrastructure development underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and promoting sustainable practices in the region.
