Afghanistan Permanently Closes Embassy in India.

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi officially announced the closure of its diplomatic mission, effective from November 23, 2023. Citing persistent challenges from the Indian government, the embassy revealed that the decision follows the earlier cessation of operations on September 30, expressing hope that the Indian government’s stance would favorably change to allow the mission to operate normally.

The embassy clarified that the closure should not be perceived as an internal conflict involving diplomats switching allegiance to the Taliban. Instead, it attributed the decision to broader changes in policy and interests. Despite facing limitations in resources and power, the embassy claimed to have worked tirelessly for the betterment of Afghan citizens in India, especially in the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul.

Over the past twenty-seven months, the Afghan community in India has experienced a notable decrease, with refugees, students, and traders departing the country, resulting in nearly a 50% reduction in numbers since August 2021. The embassy noted minimal issuance of new visas during this period.

Addressing efforts to tarnish the embassy’s image, the statement highlighted the team’s commitment to working diligently in challenging circumstances. It emphasized efforts to secure humanitarian aid, online education scholarships, facilitate trade, and advocate for the formation of a broad-based government. The embassy expressed concern over challenges hindering diplomatic efforts, justifying the presence and work of Taliban-appointed and affiliated diplomats.

The Afghan embassy clarified that there are currently no representatives from the Afghan Republic in India, with diplomats associated with the Taliban actively participating in routine online meetings. The fate of the mission now rests upon the Indian government, which has the option to maintain its closure or consider alternatives, including handing it over to Taliban diplomats.

The embassy concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of India for their support over the past 22 years and reaffirming its commitment to serving the people of Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s Ambassador to India, Farid Mamundzay, acknowledged India as a steadfast strategic partner and endorsed the decision to close the mission as in the best interest of Afghanistan.

In an unequivocal statement, the embassy rejected certain consulates that operate under instructions and funding from Kabul, stating they do not align with the objectives of a legitimate or elected government but rather serve the interests of an illegitimate regime.

This development comes after the Ministry of External Affairs in India rejected allegations in October that India did not provide support to the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi, following the earlier announcement of the embassy’s cessation of operations.
