Massive fire explosion in New Delhi Darbhanga express special train. More than 15 train accidents in 2023.

https://www.theoligo.com/indias-deadliest-train-accident-in-odisha-over-280-deaths-approx-1000-injured-due-to-absence-of-rail-kavach/On Wednesday, a grave incident occurred as the Delhi-Darbhanga Express train faced a calamity near Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. A video depicted a substantial blaze spreading to coaches, including the S1 sleeper coach, leading to injuries for at least eight individuals. The situation was intensified by the ongoing Chhath festival, causing exceptional crowding on trains to Bihar.

The severity of the incident emphasizes the need for robust safety measures in the railway system, especially during peak travel times. The authorities investigated the cause of the fire and assessed emergency response protocols. The S1, S2, and S3 coaches suffered complete damage, and the luggage coach was partially damaged in the fire.

Etawah Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Kumar Verma, suggested a preliminary cause of the fire being a short circuit. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, with efforts underway to resume the train’s journey. Passengers reported an explosion preceding the fire, prompting some to jump from the train, Hindustan Times reported.

While significant damage occurred, all passengers were reportedly safe, according to Etawah SSP Sanjay Verma. Fire personnel spent two hours extinguishing the blaze and ensuring no embers reignited it. The Overhead Equipment (OHE) line was shut down as investigations continue to determine the fire’s cause.

India has witnessed a series of over 15 tragic railway accidents in 2023, raising concerns about rail safety. Notable incidents include collisions, derailments, and fires, resulting in casualties and injuries. The most recent collision in Andhra Pradesh claimed 14 lives. Issues such as signal overshooting, fire-related incidents, and derailments highlight the urgent need for modernizing signalling systems and implementing enhanced safety measures across the extensive railway network. These unfortunate events highlight the critical importance of vigilance and swift action to ensure the well-being of those affected and to prevent such incidents in the future. As the railway system reflects on this incident, the focus on safety measures and emergency preparedness becomes paramount, especially during periods of heightened travel.
